nerdy trainfings

It seems to me that whenever I get a Virgin Trains train or arrive on one at Oxenholme station, the train is running late. Is that really so, or is it me just imaging things, or is it that I just happen to be unlucky?

To work out whether I am right or not, I wrote a little script to scrape the live departure boards of nationalrail.co.uk and keep some of the results in a database. Then I wrote a script to analyse that data, the output from which forms the basis of this page.

Seems like I’m not wrong, especially with the trains I tend to travel on most, middle-of-the-day Monday to Friday.

Note: the analysis omits trains that don’t run during every week of the analysis period, i.e. it omits one-offs that are specials run during disruption, for those can be expected to be late.

Note: On the lists of least and most punctual trains, if weekends are included with weekdays the statistics are a little skewed because trains that run only at weekends will be a smaller sample. Best to select weekdays and weekend separately (from the checkboxes at the head of the page) for a more meaningful picture on these lists.
